To me fly fishing adds another dimension to the whole angling experience. At times it is a better tool
for presenting lures than conventional light tackle. When the spanish mackerel are eating tiny silversides in the early spring
we can “match the hatch” and out fish the boats that are trolling. Aside from that it is just fun. The long rod transfers
the fight straight to the angler and the one to one ratio of the reels puts you in the heat of the fight.
Some people are a little intimidated by the fly rod, with the sweeping casting motions, and the line whipping through the air. Here is a little secret, it isn’t that hard. With a little work most anyone can catch fish with the long rod. I teach
beginning fly fishing lessons at my home under very controlled conditions. Notice that I said fly fishing and not fly casting. First we work on the mechanics on a mowed pasture where there are no distractions or snags to hinder your learning. This allows
us to work out the mechanics of proper casting and build a solid foundation for future learning. We also discuss presentation
techniques, flies, and fighting and landing fish. This in itself would be sufficient to get you started, but at Boykin Rod &
Gun I like to go the extra mile. The next step is to move to my private pond where we can apply all that we have learned on
some real fish. There is no substitute in learning for doing.
We will also be offering salt water
and warm water fly tying lessons. Watch for postings for schedules and rates or contact us by phone or email.
